1PM - Chapter House

BBQ

We have not conducted an official campaign since 2003 and we have netted approximately $10,000 each of the last two requests. We are hoping for continued support from those that have given in the past but we are also hoping that others, who may have not been able to contribute before, might find it possible to send some sort of donation.

Over the past six years, the Beta Zeta House Corporation has replaced components of our sprinkler system, upgraded the boiler room as well as enhancing other life safety measures which cost approximately $45,000.00. This figure does not capture renovations to rooms, the kitchen, living room floor, and other items that have been accomplished during the same period.

In 2007, we worked with an engineering firm to conduct a structural analysis of the chapter house per the request of the Town of Orono. After receiving the report, the new code enforcement officer had concerns over language in the report which seemed to indicate that there may be some structural issues especially in regards to the foundation. Although the report was clear in that there was no imminent danger to the residents or guests, the Town felt that there was a need to act quickly to deter any possibility of danger. Prior to the opening of the chapter house for use, the Town suggested they would not provide us with a permit to operate as a residence.

In order to satisfy the Town’s concerns, the executive committee, under guidance from our legal representation, filed an agreement to ban smoking, discontinue parties and bar usage of the RAM at this time. We agreed to begin the process of replacing the west side foundation (rear side facing the parking lot) and install a temporary shoring system which would take some of the burden off of the existing foundation. The shoring system was done for about $11,000.00, less than the actual bid, while the west side foundation replacement estimate is still undetermined but will most likely be about $20,000.00.
